Baybayin

baybayin tattoo

I’ve always wanted an Baybayin script tattoo ever since I saw the “Ka” symbol on one of the KKK flags. I remember frustrated trying to draw the perfect “I” symbol for one of my early websites about 10 years ago. My tattoo weapon of choice was Aleks Figueroa of BalisongTattoo. I was lucky that he was able to squeeze me in at such a short notice. I just contacted him a week ago after I found out on his site that he was going to be in the bay area (San Francisco).

Initially, I wanted just a big “Ka” on my shoulder brush style. I’ve always been a fan of Kanji but I would never get any on me. 1) I would feel weird because I’m not Japanese & 2) What if it gets done wrong and it means dickhead? I wouldn’t want to be featured on hanzismatter. After thinking about it, I decided to go with something with deeper meaning as do all my other tattoos. After consulting with Aleks, I opted to go with the inner forearm for placement rather than the shoulder. I’m not going to mention what it means, you will have to figure it out for yourself. Try learning Baybayin ata, it’s not that hard.

Christian Tattoos

jesus tattoo

After doing a little research for the “God doesn’t like tattoos?” post, I came across ReligiousTattoos.net. It’s a website a website devoted to Judeo-Christian body art. The interesting section is bible support.

Leviticus 19:26-31 deals with pagan practices and God’s prohibitions against adopting those practices. In verse 28, God is warning the Jewish people about a pagan practice at funerals, where pagans would mutilate/mark themselves to appease their false gods. The pagans hoped that by cutting themselves and marking images/symbols of idols on their bodies, that they would obtain favour in the afterlife from their false gods, both for themselves and for those who just died.

See the Matthew Henry Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible, the New John Gill Exposition of the Entire Bible, the Adam Clarke Commentary, and the Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible for more detailed analysis.

As no one with a Christian tattoo is trying to pacify a pagan deity, it is safe to say this verse is not relevant to us.

God doesn’t like tattoos?

Here’s another closed-minded view of tattoos from bible thumper Julie’s Jewels:

“It has become “the thing to do” and consider it to be “body art”. It used to be that the only ones who had tattoos were heavy metal rockers, bikers, etc. Today people from all walks of life have them. It has become a fashion craze. Many of the professional athletes that our children look up to have them.”

I agree with her that it has become “the thing to do” and it does make me kinda sick, she fails to realize that tattoos have been around a lot longer than rockers & bikers. They have been around for thousands of years in all parts of the world. To people like me (Filipino), it’s a direct link to my indigenous culture before we were raped and murdered by the one’s who came with the sword & cross to civilize the so-called savages.

International Pinoy entertainer, Billy Crawford shows off his tattoos for the Philippine press. Bill is in town to promote his “Move! The Billy Crawford’s Search for Pinoy Dancers” reality TV show.

My first tattoo was [when I was] twenty-one. It was a gecko. Dito lang [sa right arm]. That was my first,” he recounts. Billy then points to the one on his left arm, which is a map of the Philippines superimposed over a sun and surrounded by Alibata characters. The multi-talented star explains that the Alibata characters mean “Isang buhay, maraming pangarap.

Too bad they don’t have a photo of the gecko. Looks interesting.
