PinoyTattoos.com aims to build a community for anything related to Pinoy Tattoos. With this site, we wish to preserve and educate the world about our tattoo history as well as our indigenous culture. We will always try to look at things from a Pre-Hispanic point of view while keeping a realistic/open mind.

I fully acknowledge that the name of the site is goes against my personal feelings of what a “Filipino” or “Pinoy” is. Until we wake-up and break away from our colonial chains, the name will remain (noPhilippines.com). I also realize that the “T” in the logo is the “LA” Baybayin character.

Who runs this site?
I’m Christian Cabuay currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area after living in Manila for many years. I’ve always wanted to get a tattoo since high school in the 90’s. I’m glad I waited over a decade before getting inked when I moved back to the Philippines to go to college and work. If I didn’t wait, I might have been stuck with some cartoon character, meaningless tribal flash design, or barbwire armband.

Baybayin
My 1st exposure to Baybayin was in 1993 during my junior year in high school in the US. I remember finding a pamphlet about the Katipunan and the revolution. In this pamphlet, there were photos of all the revolution flags. It tripped me out that we had a KKK flag (during that time I was studying Black Nationalism concepts). The 3 symbols that were engraved in my brain were 1) The black pirate looking flag with a skull, 2) The sun with 8 rays and 3) A strange looking capital “I”. When I learned that it represented “K” in our very own indigenous alphabet, I made it my personal goal to read and write Baybayin. I studied and practice it on and off for a few years and decided to refocus after talking to Aleks Figueroa who gave me a couple Baybayin tattoos.

My art
I’m not a tattoo artist. I write Baybayin and some people use my art as tattoos. You can check out my other sites Baybayin.com for more info.
