Baybayin company logo as a tattoo?
March 25, 2008 by Christian
Here’s what probably happened….he was surfing the internet looking for cool Filipino tattoo designs. He came across Malaya Designs and found this great company logo. Besides being unoriginal, the additional Baybayin on the top and bottom uses computer fonts. Also, the top one thats supposed to say Mabuhay actually says MA-BU-HA-A.
Malaya – The word “Malaya” (free) in baybayin, enclosed in a box with the words “Mabuhay” and “Pilipino” on the top and the bottom.

I think the tattoo and logo are cool but that’s right the baybayin says mabuhaa…loz. He even got it done in the Philippines! It looks like it can be fixed though.

thats the problem here propping up here in the country. coz i reside in the philippines. many of our filipino brothers dont even understand the baybayin nor do they try to truly research about their culture. sad really.

The “malaya” design is indeed a company logo, but it is cool. It may not be original but it serves it’s purpose. The baybayin script may be off by a couple of strokes but let’s all remember that it is indeed a dead language and that NOBODY can really claim to be an expert at it. It’s good that a lot of people are getting into it nowadays thus its resurgence, but bear in mind that having a “Baybayin” tattoo doesn’t necessarily mean that you are indeed PILIPINO… “Ito ay nasa puso at gawa, at hindi lamang sa bigkas ng dila.”

You are right PUGO, having a Baybayin tattoo doesn’t make anyone Filipino or more Filipino than the next. The “connection” is why people tattoo themselves with Baybayin and I can attest that it can be very empowering for each and every one of them. Anyone can learn Baybayin as long as they make the effort, unfortunately some people don’t and end up with misinformation. Were you aware that there are still indigenous people in Mindoro that write in a “Baybayin” script?…it is indeed a “living script” and not dead. For clarification, the Baybayin is not a language rather it is a writing system.

Great site you have here.
I’m laughing at some of the stuff people are willing to etch forever on their skin without doing proper research.
I read the “malaya” tat as malama since the tail of “La” closed of “ya” making it “ma” (sounds weird saying it like that), with the traditional reading of baybayin the last letter with no consonant being dropped I figured the tat was suppose to be “malama(n)”, which can be understood as fat.
again great site and also a great service to people willing to do the research for their tat
