Brandon Vera’s Baybayin tattoos
October 13, 2007 by Christian
UFC Light-Heavyweight contender Brandon Vera has 4 big Baybayin tattoos on his back signifying Mundo (Earth), Hangin (Wind), Tubig (Water) and Apoy (Fire). Based on the photos below, it looks like the MU character is missing a kudlit below it. Without the kudlit, it would read MA-N-DO. While Mundo is conversational Tagalog for Earth, Lupa (Dirt) is probably more proper. Interested in getting artwork of this old pre-Filipino writing system? Check out the translation services.

Thanks!

Correct – a closer translation of Earth could be daigdig or lupa

yeah i was thinking about that when i first saw his tat, i was sounding it out, and i was thinking to myself “world”? he probably just did what most filipinos here in the states do who don't speak tagalog (guilty of doing it sometimes) is literally translate the word, by finding out how to say “earth” thinking the tagalog equivalent is like english where earth means the planet AND the element….then i also thought to myself….dang i for one would not like to tell the guy his tat is wrong, i'd probably be thrown into a chokehold lol
actually, with the Baybayin alphabet it’s very difficult to spell out some of the tagalog words. It’s a mistake that most people do when they don’t know much about the writing. The alphabet doesn’t have a complete set of vowels and therefore some words can’t be spelled out properly. Probably why he wrote “mundo” over “lupa” or “daidig”.
ps. I wanted to write something on my back with the old letters but realized what I wanted to write wasn’t compatible with the Baybayin alphabet.
ung hangin.. hinde tama, kung tutoo dapat ung naka lagay HANGN lang eh.. may kulang na isa ung hangin
please feedback because its important im wanna have the mundo, hangin, tubig and apoy tattoo in baybayin/kudlit

re JM – Lupa is very very doable, and only takes two characters
