Baybayin tattoo creator
June 18, 2008 - 4,814 views
One of the major reasons why people hesitate getting a tattoo is not knowing how it will look like. To help you get a better idea how a Baybayin tattoo might look like on your body, I create the Baybayin tattoo creator. View the screencast to see how it works….
Here’s how to use it:
1) Select the body part you want to put Baybayin on 2) Drag the characters over the photo
*You can also drag the photos below. Whant to find out what the characters mean? I purposely left out character translations so that you could learn Baybayin.
*I wouldn’t use the Baybayin images below as you may have a the same tattoo as someone else. Get a custom design instead.
*More body parts coming soon. Questions? Suggestions? Leave a comment

Filipina tattoo artist - Julie Ann Grafia
June 10, 2008 - 2,578 views
The Manila Times recently featured Filipina tattoo artist, Julie Ann Grafia.

In the Philippines, Julie Ann Grafia, or Juki as most people call her, has been a freelance tattoo artist for almost three years now. She got her first tattoo when she was 20 and has since been adding to her body of work. She is addicted to the needle. No pain, no gain.
PinoyTattoos.com article feature
May 26, 2008 - 795 views
PinoyTattoos.com was featured in the Contra Costa Times today along with Bay Area tattoo artists.

Here’s an excerpt of the article:
Christian Cabuay of Walnut Creek, founder of PinoyTattoos.com, is fluent in a Filipino script called Baybayin. Although he is not a tattoo artist, his artistic skills and in-depth knowledge have made him a go-to guy for one-of-a-kind Baybayin designs suitable for body art.
Baybayin, a writing system used in the pre-Spanish colonized society of the Philippines, uses specific characters for certain sounds as do other Asian languages. It has been popularly referred to as Alibata, but Cabuay says that isn’t the correct term.
Lasik surgery vs Tattoo
May 16, 2008 - 549 views
I had lasik eye surgery done on Friday and was asked how the pain was compared to getting tattooed. Getting tattooed hurts a lot more than a laser burning your eyeballs. In fairness, the eyes were numbed by drops. It was pretty trippy smelling your eyes being burned for 60 seconds (about 30 seconds per eye).

Underground Filipino artists in Saudi Arabia
May 12, 2008 - 2,224 views
Filipino OFW’s (Overseas Foreign Workers or OFI’s - Overseas Foreign Investors as Gloria Arroyo says) are setting up underground tattoo and body piercing spots in Saudi Arabia. It looks like the Filipinos setting up shop are nurses. ArabNews reports:
Young Saudi men and women are increasingly getting their bodies tattooed and pierced, something that is fueling a growth in underground tattooist and body piercers, who are often not only unhygienic but also expensive. Tattooists and body piercers that operate in Jeddah are generally Filipinos, who work from their homes and advertise their services by word-of-mouth.
I’m not sure what the Saudi law is regarding tattoos but I’m assuming the penalty is steep. If any Filipino tattoo artists from the middle east are out there, email me. I would love to interview you.

Here’s a related photo sent in by Roxie from Manila. According to Roxie, the Arabic letting on her lower back is her name. Nice
Filipino tribal tattoo and cross
May 9, 2008 - 8,313 views
Here a great shoulder tattoo sent in by RPB from LA. It’s done by the tatak ng apat na alon tribe. What I find interesting is the mixture of “Filipino” tribal and Christianity. Some may say that it shows the confusion of many Filipinos in regards to their culture. While trying to discover and represent our “roots”, we are still living in the colonial mindset. It’s an interesting paradox.

Looking for Asian tattoos for newspaper article
May 8, 2008 - 2,360 views
I was recently interviewed for a local (San Francisco Bay Area) newspaper regarding Baybayin and “Filipino” tattoos. The writer asked me if I knew anyone who had any Asian tattoos. If you 1) Live in the SF Bay area and 2) Have any Asian tattoos and would like to photographed, please submit a photo and mention “Newspaper feature” in the message section. Thanks!
