Hail Mary prayer

This beautiful looking tattoo (She looks like Reese Witherspoon) is the Hail Mary prayer in Baybayin. The translation was probably sourced from the “1st” book printed in the Philippines, the Doctrina Christiana in 1593. Some say that’s when Baybayin was used as a tool to control us and therefore inappropriate as a “tribute” tattoo unless your OK with being a conquered people. What do you think?

PS: Sorry for the sparse updates. I’ve been busy preparing for the Spring/Summer Filipino Festival tour here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have a couple of new products in store. Additionally, I’m in the process of hiring a blogging assistant.

You know, I think one of the things that holds us back is this dwelling on being colonial subject and being a “conquered people”. Why not celebrate the fact that despite the fact the Spanish and Americans came and conquered, we were able to take elements of those cultures and make them their own? Why not celebrate the fact that had the Doctrina NOT been printed in baybayin, that evidence of the Tagalog and Ilocano styles would have been LOST. The Spaniards could have easily “hidden” the fact that our people had a writing system before the Latin alphabet became widespread, and we’d have only known about it once it was discovered that the Tagbanwa, and Mangyan had their own systems.
Let’s face it we wouldn’t be who we are today if we had not been conquered. All of the elements of Filipino culture we like ARE from being a conquered people. We should celebrate our diversity no mater how negative parts of our past are. Where we’ve been decides who we are, we can’t divorce ourselves from it, and regretting our past only holds us back.

hey i love this tattoo..i have been thinking about getting the our father in alibata writting as well. i just need a good translation into the text,, like i’ve tried on eaglescorner, but im not sure if that’s accurate. help please!
