“While living in America it is very easy to become assimilated with others in the country. I am not saying to avoid it, but I wanted something to give me a reminder of where I came from. My tattoo represents my roots from the Philippines and as a reminder to myself everyday about my culture. It was designed by my cousin and done by my cousin.”

This baybayin tattoo of Paula Calinagan from Seattle means “di matarok”. Translated in English it means immeasurable, can’t reach, in depth and many more. For the bearer, her tattoo is just a simple reminder that she should not judge, label other people and herself or anything in this universe because there is always story behind something and always more to know.

This tattoo is a reminder to herself, Anna from Los Angeles, that she should keep fighting during tough times and never give up. Her tattoo means “Sugod” (in Filipino) and when translated to English means “to start it or to keep fighting”.
Filipinos are really fighter and rarely you will hear they want to give up. They will just smile in the hardest and darkest days of their lives. That’s Filipino spirit!
Please note that she took a photo of herself with a mirror, that’s why the Baybayin is “mirrored”.
