Religion has been the core of Filipinos life. There are different religions around the Archipelago but Catholic is the dominating one.

This tattoo from Mr. Millon is all about sin and prayer. The glistening cross with prayer signifies how Filipino lives with prayers. He said that the main meaning of this tattoo is that we are sinners on how we live and we are prayers on the way we live.

Mart Momongan from Bay Area California had this tattoo in his shoulder. The images in this tattoo are a cross and Filipino flag. Now, he is wondering if you guys can give him some ideas of a Filipino Tribal tattoo to add to this.

In Sergio Tandoc from South Jersey’s back are the images of cross with Filipino Sun, fighting stick and bolo, Shamrock and Lily flower. The Shamrock represents his lovely wife named Patti while the Lily flower represents his sweet daughter named Lily.

This Sergio’s version of Pinoy Pride which was created I think on the month of November by Mike Morrison of The Ink Station is very symbolic and as well as very Filipino.

Nagbukalan Shrine

This tattoo of Jon from NJ was based on the Nagbukalan Shrine of Alitagtag, where his mom is from. His friend took that idea and tried to give it a futuristic feel. Its a dedication to his heritage and beliefs. When linked with his tattoo on his left arm (a crest/shield) the overall meaning is one of protection and action for himself and loved ones, to do what he need to in order to do whats best for those he care for the most. In a sense, it is like his sword and shield.

Truly an art! This tattoo is composed of dragon wrapping a cross.

Dragon symbolizes power, strength and strong will. On the other hand, cross symbolizes divinity, religion and spirituality.

Here a great shoulder tattoo sent in by RPB from LA. It’s done by the tatak ng apat na alon tribe. What I find interesting is the mixture of “Filipino” tribal and Christianity. Some may say that it shows the confusion of many Filipinos in regards to their culture. While trying to discover and represent our “roots”, we are still living in the colonial mindset. It’s an interesting paradox.
