Half-done, this tribal tattoo of Mikey from San Diego, California is a free-hand work by Tha Kuya at Islandtat. The Lakas in an aggressive bamboo style was his own idea and the others were ideas of Kuya. Shark teeth is also visible in his tattoo.

Mikey is still planning to put bamboo leaves, binig patter and 3D shading of the shark teeth.

Our anonymous sender shared to us his tattoo. He was born Filipino but raised in the island of Guam. And his tattoo is the Philippine 3 Stars and a Sun. On the middle of the sun is the symbol of Guam. His tattoo really meant to show his two countries. This also shows his blood (Filipino) and his home (Guam).

A very loving and respectful indeed, that is Bernard Pangilinan of Las Vegas. His tattoo is very meaningful and it has a heart. His tattoo includes blue and red parts of the Filipino flag represented by water and fire. He said he did this because he also wants to represent his children in his tattoo. His son’s name means “calming seas”. His daughter’s name means “life” and from fire comes new life. He wanted them to learn about their culture and described to them what their flag’s colors and symbols mean.

“A fetus handling armalite gun”..sounds weird but actually
not based on what you can see in the bearer’s tattoo.

George from Hawaii, which is the bearer, had this tattoo on
his leg as a remembrance of his little girl’s birth while
he was in Iraq. We can assume that he was a military destined
in Iraq because his tat is showing a gun and we all know
the many US militars are being sent to Iraq to maintain
peace and order.

By the way, George called this piece as “Lost Soul”. Why?

As what the title said, this tattoo is a traditional tribal one with Alibata saying “Filipino”. The tattoo is located at the outer side of Shawn’s leg.

To give you some background, tribal tattoos are more on black inks, holds up very well and doesn’t fade easily. Plus, this is easy to design and very bold. So the next time you want to have a customized tattoo, you can consider trying this first because there are lot of tattoo artists that can do very well on this.

Translating those letters in the tattoo using Baybayin will result to the word “Pagala.”

According to Roger of Hawaii, this design, which contained 3 Stars and a Sun, means Filipino Pride and those letters at the middle, which means “Pagala“, is his last name. He also added that Filipinos should always have pride in themselves and nationality because it is running in their blood. SO BE PROUD!

Philippines, being a predominantly Catholic country, celebrates Holy week, locally known as Semana Santa or Mahal na Araw, as one of its most important festivities.

The week starts with Palm Sunday wherein reenactments of Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem are present in almost all Churches celebrating the Holy Mass. Continuous chanting of prayers of Jesus’ life called Pabasa occurs from Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday. Maundy Thursday involves Church visits or Visita Iglesia while Good Friday is commemorated with street processions. Black Saturday should be observed with solemnity but ironically, this also happens to be the best time of the year for family reunions and outings. The week ends at Easter Sunday with a ceremony called Salubong featuring kids dressed as angels who are lifted up into mid-air.

We wonder if the tattoo was done as a form of penitensya, another peculiar activity by the Filipinos during Holy Week.

Considered as the first international treaty, Spaniard Miguel Lopez de Legazpi entered into a pact called Sandugo with Bohol chieftain Datu Sikatuna ensuring friendly relations with the Filipinos on March of 1565. Sandugo or blood compact is a Visayan term which fuses the words isang and dugo meaning one blood.

One ironic thing about the blood compact is its aftermath. Performing Sandugo was relatively significant to the Bohol natives as it symbolized brotherhood and peace. Howbeit, Lopez de Legazpi took possession of the island in the name of King Phillip II few days after the compact. It was the commencement of the 256-year rule of the Spaniards; reason why Spanish influence is very much obvious in Filipino’s culture
