Losing family member is very difficult to deal with. As for the bearer of this tattoo, Chantal from Switzerland, she already underwent with that kind of situation. She lost his uncle and his Uncle’s family in Boracay. Religion has been the core of Filipinos life. There are different religions around the Archipelago but Catholic is the dominating one.

This tattoo from Mr. Millon is all about sin and prayer. The glistening cross with prayer signifies how Filipino lives with prayers. He said that the main meaning of this tattoo is that we are sinners on how we live and we are prayers on the way we live.

“But deliver us from evil” are the words engraved at the lower back of the neck part of Rusty from New York. The script is in Baybayin font and is beautifully done by Joelee of Vista Body Arts.

“But deliver us from evil” is the last part of “Our Father” (Ama Namin in Filipino) prayer. This tattoo is a good idea for devoted Catholic and Christians who would also like to have tattoo that will signify their religion and beliefs.

Doctrina Christiana – Thoughts on Colonialism, Tattoos, & Baybayin

The Doctrina Christiana is thought to be the first book printed in the Philippines in 1593. Used to help convert us into Christians, its text was written in Spanish and Tagalog, using the Roman alphabet along with the indigenous syllabary, Baybayin. Today, the only known original copy resides in the US Library of Congress in Washington DC.

Over the past 5 years I’ve been meeting people at my events at festivals, learning institutions, museums and online and it became apparent that many people don’t how Baybayin works how relevant it is to rediscovering our pre-colonial past. I spend a lot of time explaining Baybayin and I feel its a subject people can be passionate about but need assistance.

I had plans of launching the Baybayin School program alongside with my documentary but I’ve decided to launch the program ahead.

The focus will be on the basics on how to write and read Baybayin. It will be for beginners who wish to learn the basics of the script.

If I just described you, and you would like private online mentoring from me, then this program is for you.

Another sexy back tattoo was shared to us by Mae of San Diego. These words are “But deliver us from evil. Amen.” which was translated to Baybayin A.K.A Alibata. This beautiful looking tattoo (She looks like Reese Witherspoon) is the Hail Mary prayer in Baybayin. The translation was probably sourced from the “1st” book printed in the Philippines, the Doctrina Christiana in 1593. Some say that’s when Baybayin was used as a tool to control us and therefore inappropriate as a “tribute” tattoo unless your OK with being a conquered people. What do you think?
